Hun Xen is the new Hugo Chavez of Southeast Asia?

The Asia's longest serving ruler has set what appears to be a personal record for his longest public speech: 5 hours and 20 minutes.

Required viewing: Cambodian PM speaks for 5 hours

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) — He's no Castro or Chavez, but Asia's longest serving ruler has set what appears to be a personal record for longest public speech: 5 hours and 20 minutes.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen spoke to the lower house of parliament in a nationally televised speech Thursday that was mandatory viewing for civil servants.

Government spokesman Khieu Kanharith said he believed it was Hun Sen's longest speech in 27 years as prime minister.

Hun Sen, 61, spoke without taking breaks — or questions — mostly on sensitive border disputes with Vietnam. He blamed France, the former colonial ruler of both countries, for not clearly demarcating the border.

Politicians often use the border issue to stir nationalism and garner support, and Hun Sen is seeking re-election in 2013.

His speech was far from the lengthiest among world leaders. Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro frequently made five-hour speeches outdoors in the hot Caribbean sun in his heyday.

And Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez spoke for nine hours in his state-of-the-nation speech in January.

What about illegal Vietnamese boaters who flow over Mekong river into Phnom Penh area? Is that the result of former colonial ruler, France, too?

The speech can last 24 hours nostop but the bottomline is Whatever and whenever, there is no independent observation to verify and that is the problem still exist. Waste time.

But if he uses this public podium to atack th opposition parties rather than the border issues then, it is a different matter.

Why whould France care about border's markers if she colonizes the whole indochina? Besides, without France's protection, Cambodia would not have existed as a country.

Vietnam defeated Cambodia in 1979 war and she has maintained her influence and control in Khmer's affairs ever since. Vietnamese freely travel to Cambodia without restriction.

Border's markers are merely cosmetic issues designed to fool Khmers that they have a home.

This uneducated farmer had no education. The French saved the whole of Khmer by removing the Youn and the Siam but to this uneducated farmer, the French didn't make his family rich. Now Ah Kwak need 5hrs to thank the Youn to giving his families money.
