Disgraced Preah Vihear provincial police chief Mao Pov will be moved to the Ministry of Interior and Pursat’s deputy police chief, Sy Kiri, will take his place in a ceremony scheduled for Thursday, police officials confirmed yesterday.
Pursat police chief Ros Bunan said that Kiri has been appointed as Preah Vihear provincial police chief, a post which Pov had held since 2007.
“According to information I have received, Mr Sy Kiri has been appointed as provincial police chief of Preah Vihear,” he said.
Keo Chamroeun, deputy police chief of Preah Vihear province, confirmed that an official event removing Pov will be held on October 25 and attended by the presiding National Police Commissioner General Neth Savoeun.
Pov was accused of drunkenly discharging his weapon in a Siem Reap hotel on the night of September 30.
According to Siem Reap provincial prosecutor Ty Soveinthal, Pov said the shooting was in self defence as he believed someone had followed him to his room.
He was later called for questioning by General Savoeun before the decision to remove him was made.
An official within the Ministry of Interior said that Minister Sar Kheng officially signed the letter of removal on October 19.
Lor Chan, coordinator of Adhoc for Preah Vihear, said that Pov was accused by a woman in early August of cursing and beating her, but the complaint was withdrawn after an undisclosed agreement was reached between the two parties.
