Bamboo Promise: Prison without Walls - By Vicheara Houn

"The Genocide that was perpetrated in Cambodia left a deep wound on my soul. This can be seen from the outside as a scar that symbolizes my survival. If someone looks deeply at this scar they would understand my story. Unless you know me you cannot see my pain so I wrote Bamboo Promise that the world could learn about the truth and perhaps that might lead to some kind of peace in the world. The lessons that we suffered through, in Cambodia, should be heeded by mankind so that this kind of tragedy never happens again. I am thankful that I survived to tell the story of this triumph of the human spirit. It was very difficult to write my own memoir but because of my deep sorrow and regret for the loss of my family, and it is only the love of my children and family motivated me to continue to write until it became a real book. It took me 12 years to finish my book, Bamboo Promise, due to the pain of my memories."- Bamboo Promise

Cambodia is a country with beautiful temple and arts, and steeped in the Buddhist religion. Despite this, the once-civilized society turned to violence and proceeded to destroy itself. People betrayed their parents. their children, and their friends. In the process, they extinguished everything that represented the truth and beauty of Cambodia.

How does an individual withstand such experiences and resume life after having fought for a single grain of rice and witnessed unbelievable cruelties, such as mothers crushing their babies, young children willing to kill for a morsel of food. and the entire decimation of normal urban life?

Bamboo Promise is the remarkable and intensely personal autobiography of a woman raised as the sheltered and privileged only child of a prominent Cambodian family. As a young bride, she and her entire family were swept up in the Cambodian genocide of the 1970s. She recounts how she adapted and survived in the harsh killing fields of the Khmer Rouge terrorists in the compelling narrative.

Although the author survived many horrors, Bamboo Promise is not a horror story. It is the story of the evolution of a human spirit as she endured a tumultuous upbringing and unspeakable tragedy. The insight into life after Pol Pot's defeat and Cambodia's subjection by the communist Vietnamese are particularly unique. Bamboo Promise is also a story of hope, as she found lasting happiness in the United States.

Bamboo Promise, 2nd edition, is NOW available in paperback from Barnsandnoble.com, amazon.com and Abbottpress.com.

there is a giant step in the right direction would be to accept the fact that you're still a bunch of sore losers ( ScamSR and the followers). History will also judge your performent according to your useless and weak agendas, and the history will be written ScamSR as a paranoid leader, cry baby, fugitive, and a bunch of psychopath opportunist waiting to take advantage of poor people. The world have watched you sore losers haven't done anything to make Cambodian proud of your records. There're not a single list of all the good things you have done in the past and now to uplift people life. My hero samdach Hun Sen will forgive your sorry asses if you joined the CPP for this up comming election. You potato diggers made lots of painful mistakes in the past by dividing Cambodia apart, which is shame on you sore losers. It certainly that we (CPP) would forgive you if your leader ScamSr come back to Cambodia and serve his sentences and futher improve his image as a strong leader not the fugitive one. If he didn't dare to come back than stop begging for forgiveness from my hero Hun Sen, maybe it would be wise to seek counseling from Pi Anh.hahahaahah

Introduction:

The purpose of this paper is to explore the causes and sources of the continued suffering of the majority of the Cambodian people and the continued hold of power in Cambodia by the criminal regime of the Cambodian People's Party (CPP). At the same time, the international community appears to also capitulate to Hun Sen's threats and manipulations. Cambodians are now in these death traps that are built by both the Vietnamese and our own people, and it will not be easy to get out of them.

It is hoped that by looking squarely into the causes and sources of this tragedy, future generations of Cambodians inside and outside Cambodia might be able to come up with new ideas in order to allow the Cambodian people to get out safely from these death traps.

Most Cambodians still blame the Vietnamese for all the disaster that befell on Cambodia since the 18th century. It is true that Vietnam has been trying to colonize Cambodia for almost three centuries. It is true that this colonialist policy of Vietnam continues until today. The invasion of Cambodia in 1978 was the most obvious and recent manifestation of that imperialist policy.

Despite the fact that the invasion of Cambodia was acknowledged by the international community as an act of aggression and Vietnam was overwhelmingly condemned for that action at the United Nations, Vietnam succeeded in installing a subservient government, the CPP before withdrawing.

More importantly, it has succeeded to turn the table around in its favor by judiciously playing the Khmer Rouge card, and by using and enhancing its own image as victim of foreign aggressions. Although, Cambodia has also been a victim of one of the worst holocausts in modem history, the Cambodian people are not viewed as victims of a foreign aggression but rather of their own making.

For instance, Vietnam fought against France, China and the United States and very successfully. While in Cambodia, Sihanouk gave permission to the US to carpet bombing the Eastern part of Cambodia without informing those who lived in that area, and while the CPP allowed the Vietnamese army to invade Cambodia in order to save their own skin. These events showed that Cambodians are insensitive to the well-being of their own people, and therefore, from the international community's point of view, they are not victims of any foreign aggressions. On the contrary, Vietnam has become not the invader of Cambodia, but its liberator.

At this point, it is interesting to ask the following questions

1. Why did the international community remain almost indifferent to this Vietnamese imperialist policy?

2. Why did the international community continue to bend backward to support the criminal regime of Hun Sen and the CPP, despite its continued gross violation of human rights and naked abuses of democratic principles and civil society?

3. Why are Cambodians not able to behave more like victims rather than victimizers? Are cultural isolation and intellectual disconnection the main causes of this bad image of Cambodians?

4. And if Cambodians have such a bad image, how are they going to do to changing it?

Tired to hear all insulting about this or that. It is not about Cambodia, sounds more the personal problem of them.
The problem was, that most of these people are jealous or want to be the same as Hun Sen. Of course they like to be rich, to have a lot of money and also to have a lot the wrong or right power to show their shit faces.
Feeling they are not much different as Hun Sen or other shits. They will not invest in something, but want to get everything free from Cambodia.

Anonymous said...

OK! Let's sell out Cambodia to be rich together!

Anonymous said...

The world wants to be rich, but they also have moral. Look at AH Kwak Hun Sen, he is lower then the dogs.

He wants to be rich so he sells Cambodia to Youn and Chen bits by bits. Even little girls are sold as sex slave trying to earn income.

Ah Kwak is worse then animals.

Hello psychopath 5:05 AM

FYI, those Honorary Degrees that awarded to Hun Sen or often awarded to others who have no Prior Connection with Academic Institution. It does not mean Hun Sen is an educated man or he went to schools anything.

Those honorary degrees given to people as an honor, and Hun Sen is an UNeducated leader whot was put to power by Vietnamese, so the foreign schools gave him as an honor his leadership even if he is a psychopath Vietnamese's puppet.

One more honorary degree Hun Sen has not received is from a Psychopath Unifuckity.

So do not mislead the Khmer community where many are stupid such as yourself.

Hello dull-head 7:52 AM,
Why'd you you even reply to these junk honorary degrees? Do you understand what is "Honorary Degree"?

It is an "honor Award" to someone who has no prior connection with the academic Institution".

Some educated people who received the Honorary Award that is not related to the field they studied which is common. But in Hun Sen case, is that he is an Uneducated person, those honorary degrees are to flatter his stupidity.

Even his step-son Hun Manet. Manet's degree from a real school, the school allowed him to study because of his step-father is in power. Manet was allowed into West Point for a political reason. The US has been doing that since in the past. Many children of foreign leaders always attended prestige schools even if they're so dumb and so stupid.

King Bhumibol's oldest daughter, Ubol Ratana attended MIT, majoring in Math. Did Ubol know Math well? Yeahhh...she knew best of chasing White guy.

There are lots of forests, animals, water, and rich farmland for all Cambodia to be used and prouded of. In addition of peace and prospirity, Cambodia now a day welcome all foreigners included Youn to live and work in Cambodia.
