Defence Minister Tea Banh confirmed yesterday at an event at the Ministry of Defence marking today’s 59th anniversary of Cambodia’s independence from France that last month’s shipment of tanks and armoured personnel carriers had come from Ukraine.

“I think 100 to 200 tanks is not that many,” he said to reporters, noting that, nonetheless, “We have full capacity for military operations to protect our territorial sovereignty.

“But for this year’s celebration, we were sad and full of sorrow, grieving the passing of our King Father, Norodom Sihanouk.”

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Hun Sen told 1,000 graduates at the National Institute of Education that today’s ceremony would honour the King Father’s memory.

“It is Independence Day, and also a commemoration day,” the premier said.

But Information Minister Khieu Kanharith could not confirm whether King Sihamoni would lay a wreath and light a torch inside the Independence Monument as he usually does.

Defense against whom? and
who are the absolut unvisible enemies of the Khmer folk?

Of course, the actual unvisible enemy of the Khmer comes not from the West but from the East. Every nation needs more strong army with modern weaponry, including tanks. But goals of the use of these tanks is of course not against the dangerous unvisible enemy, but against visible enemies. So, who are these visible enemies that we all see every day:

a) All Khmers who love peace, democracy, freedom, justice and esp. the own identity, own culture and the equal distribution of society. All Khmers who hate the oppression, dictatorship and communism.

b) the visible enemy who has fought against Khmer Angkor since 12th century.

My argument is based on my own experience in Cambodia and the Khmer's history.

After the liberation of 1979, I worked with vietnamese army and in that period, there was rarely illigal Vietnamese population in Cambodia (of course under the leadership of former PM Pen Sovann). Now they are every where and estimated approximately 6-7 millions. And what will be in 10 years later? My assertion that they don't need Khmers for the election any more and from 2020 the Khmer nation will be over.

Former CPP cadre and political prisoner. God bless Khmer soul and nation

It's not a tank. It's a BMP-1 armored personnel carrier, use
for crushing the uprising protesters. It's a wasting of money.

Hun Sen bought the old Soviet era tank, these tanks were decommissioned along times ago, the seller was just repaint and sold in order to get rid off from their old stockpile.

These tanks can not defend Cambodia instead it uses to defend Hun Sen and his clique.

Hi 12:36 AM,
I was born outside of Cambodia. I don't believe your number, 6-7 millions of them? That is half of the population. How come when my mother went there for travel, she said she ran into a few of them only, mainly their tourists.

If you are telling the truth, it's very scary . I hope you just exaggerate the number, please say so.

Respond to Hi 12:36AM . The Viets lived along the Tonle Sap and you can find them in major cities and small villages. Some Viets look Cambodian-Chineese. It is almost impossible for you to tell who is Viets if you do not lived in Cambodia. For example, I can tell which American is from North, South, West or East part of the United State by the way they talk because I lived so long in the United States.
