A former employee of a Cambodian rights watchdog is released at the end of his sentence for distributing political leaflets.

A Cambodian activist was released Wednesday after serving a two-year prison sentence for allegedly distributing anti-government leaflets, a conviction his rights group has called “outrageously flawed.

Leang Sokchouen, a former Takeo province staff member of the Cambodian League for the Promotion and Defense of Human Rights (LICADHO), was greeted with garlands of flowers by over 100 local and international activists and supporters as he left the Kandal provincial prison.

I am very sad because I didn’t commit any crime, and yet the court imprisoned me for two years. It is a great injustice against me,” Sokchouen said outside the prison.

January 7 and the Khmer Rouge Tribunal

Ms. Theary Seng, Dec. 2011
January 11, 2012
By Theary Seng
Letter to The Phnom Penh Post

Dear Editor,

January 7 is indeed a significant day for survivors of the Khmer Rouge. It arrested the macabre convulsions that would have swallowed all of us into a hellish hole if the Vietnamese military had not intervened.

It is a bittersweet day of commemoration through invasion.

And now, unfortunately, it is a day propagandised to be solely the Day of Liberation, neatly sweeping away the equally important fact of it being simultaneously the inaugurating day of an occupation that would last for the next decade.

That occupation began with the barricading of Phnom Penh to facilitate the plundering of its wealth by convoys of trucks heading to Vietnam and the mass crimes of the K5 plan.

My hairdresser remembers returning from Battambang to his home in Boeung Keng Kang I on February 3, 1979, only to find that all the wealthy neighbourhoods of villas and jewellery stores were still barricaded off.

It was an occupation cut short only by the meltdown of the Cold War – specifically, the break-up of the Soviet Union, which funded the Vietnamese occupation of Cambodia.

When will Hun Sen starts his last chance work of Consciousness?

08 Jan 2012
Op-Ed by Chamroeun Kith

As every year for 33 years already, Samdech Decho Hun Sen, categorically rejects, at the inaugural ceremony to launch a monument for his Unit 125 in Dong Nai Province, the idea that Vietnam invaded Cambodia. What Samdech Decho Hun Sen refuse perseveringly to understand the real reasons for which his Vietnamese friends intervened “generously” in Cambodia on the 7th of January 1979.

We wish to invite him to read in a thoughtful calm the following texts:

January 7, 1979: The Return of History

January 7th, 1979: Invasion of Kampuchea by Vietnam

If Samdech Decho has at least an iota of Khmer spirit in his mind, he will surely hear the cries and the tears of poor Khmer people for help from the insidious persecution and silent elimination policy.

Regarding the development under the Phnom Penh regime, we also invite Samdech Decho Hun to read the enclosed articles (we have collected from the internet) in order to make sense of his so called development policy in Cambodia.

It is great time that Samdech Decho Hun Sen, how big and strong he is, to undertake a real work of consciousness in order to be aware, with sadness and seriousness, of the policy of silent cultural and racial genocide against the poor and innocent Khmer people.

January 7, 1979: The Return of History

January 7th, 1979: Invasion of Kampuchea by Vietnam

Synopsis: In a fit of rage against opposition leader Sam Rainsy who questioned the celebration of 07 January - a date that marks the invasion and occupation of Cambodia by Vietnam - Soy Sopheap, the editor of DAP-news, a mouthpiece of the ruling CPP regime, retorted by calling Sam Rainsy crazy and by accusing Sam Rainsy of following Nuon Chea's doctrine. Soy Sopheap miserably failed to remember that his boss, Hun Xen, was a Khmer Rouge who had faithfully followed Pol Pot and Nuon Chea. He also failed to remember that the CPP was itself a communist party.

Vietnam did not invade, but revived Cambodia: Hun Sen

1/5/2012
Thanh Nien News (Hanoi)

Genocidal Khmer Rouge regime was backed by the US in ‘shameful foreign policy episode’(sic! How about China?)

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has categorically rejected the notion that Vietnam invaded the neighboring Southeast Asian kingdom in the 1970s, saying Vietnamese soldiers had sacrificed their lives for “the survival of the Cambodian people and the country.”

“I myself cannot explain all the meanings of the word ‘Vietnam’. In brief, Vietnam means the revival and development of Cambodia,” he said at a press briefing on January 3 in Dong Nai Province after a ceremony to launch a monument for Unit 125 the earlier day.

Founded by Hun Sen, Unit 125 was the initial force of Cambodia’s resistance movement prior to the founding of the United Front for Salvation of Cambodian Motherland on December 2, 1978 that eventually defeated the genocidal regime.

The monument was launched to mark what would be the 33rd anniversary of the ouster of the Khmer Rouge regime on January 7.

At the press conference, Hun Sen said he wanted to express his thanks to Vietnamese veterans and war martyrs who “sacrificed for the survival of Cambodian people and the country.”
