An officer of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces was arrested on charges of drug trafficking in Phnom Penh’s Thmey commune on Monday night, police said.

Sen Sok district police officer Keo Sarith said that military officer Sok Sovannarith, 27, a member of RCAF’s Brigade E-70, stationed in Kampong Speu Province’s Otdong district, was arrested while selling methamphetamine at the Suon Reatrey Restaurant in Sen Sok.

“Our police forces arrested him while he was selling the drugs to a number of drug users at the restaurant,” Sarith said.

The drug users escaped, he added.

Nephew of Cambodia's PM planning legal action

The nephew of Cambodia's Prime Minister has denied all allegations that he is involved in a heroin trafficking and money laundering syndicate targeting Australia.

Hun To has told Radio Australia's Khmer Service that he has engaged a lawyer to take legal action against the publisher of The Age newspaper for allegations it published earlier this year.

The Melbourne-based newspaper reported in March that the plan to arrest Hun To in Australia was thwarted because his application for a visa was denied by the Australian embassy in Phnom Penh.

Hun To says he is now in Australia to clear his name.

He says if he has done anything wrong, he wouldn't have been granted a visa to travel to Australia.

Eight-man gang of drug dealers arrested

A major leader of a drug-dealing gang in the Ratchadapisek area was arrested along with seven members of the gang yesterday. Pol Maj-Gen Worasak Noppasittiporn, commander of Metropolitan Police Area 2, said Sanya Lumsiri, the gang leader, and seven others were charged with possessing narcotic drugs for sale.

Police seized 4,450 methamphetamine pills, 77 grammes of crystal methamphetamine and 1,017 ecstasy pills as well as a 9mm pistol and a rifle during the raid.

The suspects admitted they sold the drugs, which were smuggled from Cambodia through Sa Kaeo province, to teenagers who frequented entertainment venues on Ratchadapisek road.
