A number of married men, not just the rich and powerful owes, but also men from the middle class, always go out to have young and beautiful mistresses. Problems between mistresses and first wives are creating havoc within the Cambodian society. Even though there is no statistics on the number of unfaithfulness in married couples, a number of married men – some very old – have mistresses who are as young or younger than their daughters or granddaughters. Why do these women accept to become mistresses? “They are needy women, they don’t care. They do everything to get as much money they can for spending – either for themselves or for their parents and relatives – because it’s easy money for them, they don’t have to work hard to get money for their spending … Let me ask you this: between working in the field under scorching sun and riding a Lexus car, pampered by servants, living in air conditioners, what do you choose?...” a beauty parlor owner claimed. As for the men, some use their power and wealth to buy young women for sex by offering them material wealth such as jewelry, cars and expensive clothes etc…

Dear Editor,
As Cambodian people are returning from P'Chum Ben, they might have fulfilled their traditional obligation to appease the ghosts of their ancestors who have been roaming different pagodas in search of food offered by their living relatives during the two-week-long festival.
However, probably very few people apart from the Buddhist monks and lay people have been able to please the gods by fully following the panca-sila, or the Five Precepts, they have repeatedly chanted during the ceremonies.
The panca-sila, or the Five Precepts in Buddhism, include:
1. Panatipata veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami (I undertake the precept to refrain from destroying living creatures).
2. Adinnadana veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami (I undertake the precept to refrain from taking that which is not given).
3. Kamesu micchacara veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami (I undertake the precept to refrain from sexual misconduct).
4. Musavada veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami (I undertake the precept to refrain from incorrect speech).
5. Suramerayamajja pamadatthana veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami (I undertake the precept to refrain from intoxicating drinks and drugs that lead to carelessness).
Since at least the Khmer Rouge period, most Cambodians have committed sins by breaching some or all the Five Precepts in Buddhism.
Undoubtedly, the Khmer Rouge had committed the most severe sins by committing genocide on their own people. Some people have continued to repeat the Khmer Rouge's sin by killing other fellow Cambodians over malice, political conflicts, robbery or land disputes.
Many Cambodians have also breached the second precept by stealing other people's property and money in the forms of theft or corruption, while others have committed the more serious sin of sexual misconduct. Despite the recently passed adultery law, some people, particularly officials and rich businessmen, have continued to have fun with their mistresses who are other people's wives or daughters.
More or less, all people have committed another sin under the fourth precept of refraining from incorrect speech. Politicians have broken the swearing-in oaths and their promises with voters; some journalists have misquoted their sources; some judges have given unjust rulings by telling lies; while other ordinary Cambodians have committed this sin in various ways.
Last but not least, some Cambodians have committed another serious sin under the fifth precept by drinking alcohol or taking drugs.
As Buddhists, Cambodians should try to restore their religious morale by following the teachings of Buddha, particularly the panca-sila, or the Five Precepts.
Cambodia will have a peaceful and harmonious society if we can follow the Five Buddhist Precepts that are the basis of the rule of law.

Funcinpec official to reveal Prince Ranariddh’s disgraceful stories on 02 January 2008?

A source indicated that the Funcinpec leadership will reveal Prince Ranariddh’s disgraceful stories on 02 January 2008, the date of the prince’s birthday. At the beginning of 2008, Princess Ratana Devi, the daughter of Prince Ranariddh, who is also known as Anna, will open a French restaurant behind the Royal Palace, the restaurant is a gift from Chea Sophara, the former governor of the city of Phnom Penh, to the prince in exchange for his (Chea Sophara) nomination to the position of the city governor from the Funcinpec quota during the second government mandate.
A Funcinpec official indicated that during the prince’s birthday, whether when he was the No. 1 prime minister or when he was the president of the National Assembly, he ordered all city and provincial government officials with the rank of ministers to give him envelopes (filled with money) and fruits baskets, and they must all be present during the celebration (of his birthday).
At the beginning of 2005, when he took Princess Ouk Phalla to see the SEA games in the Philippines, and when he took her to participate in several official functions in Cambodia, Prince Ranariddh also organized the envelopes collection quite often, exactly three times during the first two months of 2005.
On 02 January 2007, Prince Ranariddh celebrated his birthday at the National Assembly, and he also collected envelopes from Funcinpec officials who were working for the government. A few days after this event, he organized a warm up party for his wooden house in Siem Reap province. Later on, during the engagement of his daughter, Princess Ratana Devi, the prince again ordered another collection of envelopes.
At his house warm up party in Siem Reap, Prince Sisowath Pana Sirivudh became drunk and he slipped and fell down, hit his head on a piece of rock and lost consciousness. He sustained a big gash on his head and had to be transported to the hospital for emergency. Since that time, Prince Pana Sirivudh’s health took a turn for the worst, and he was no longer seen playing music instrument at the royal palace during reception anymore.
Because of his illness, the Funcinpec leadership decided to nominate Veng Sirivudh, the former legal husband of Princess Ouk Phalla, to replace Prince Pana Sirivudh, as the minister of culture and fine arts.
The same Funcinpec official also said that, when Prince Ranariddh was the president of the National Assembly, he spent a lot of time overseas with Princess Ouk Phalla. His stay in Cambodia was very minimal.
A source indicated that a Funcinpec minister had decided to defect to the CPP because he did not have the ability to find money to support the young mistress of the prince, who was a movie star and a native of Kampong Thom province. The prince had this mistress installed in France.
A Funcinpec official said that during each of prince’s birthday, he ordered (Funcinpec) ministers and secretary of states, or some city and provincials (Funcinpec) government officials to lavish money on his mistresses, in addition to the gifts they have to give him for his birthday.

Sex crimes top list of sins for China's corrupt officials [-How about their Cambodian counterparts?]

Hong Kong - Nearly 90 per cent of the disgraced Chinese communist party officials exposed in recent years have kept mistresses, a Hong Kong news report said Monday.
Fourteen of the 16 senior officials found guilty of corruption in the past five years were found to have mistresses, and many used public money to fund their affairs.
Ten of them sold land for cheap prices in return for bribes from developers or siphoned off public funds intended for construction projects, the South China Morning Post reported.
The multiple sins of the officials have been exposed by anti-corruption probes, which president Hu Jintao has declared a priority as he campaigns to weed out thieving, philandering officials.
A state report quoted by the newspaper said many of the officials caught up in scandals came from poor backgrounds and found the 'charms of money and women hard to resist.'
Among the most notorious of recent cases was that of Shanghai communist party chief Chen Liangyu, sacked for a pension fund scandal, who was believed to have had at least 11 mistresses.
China's finance minister Jin Renqing was removed from office last week amid reports that he shared a mistress 30 years his junior with a provincial party official and the head of a state oil company.
