The Norodom Ranariddh Party will soon be no more after its members voted for a new name yesterday – the Nationalist Party – and elected a replacement for its royalist founder, who announced his exit from politics on Friday.

NRP Secretary-General Sao Rany, part of a faction that tried to publicly oust Prince Norodom Ranariddh last month, yesterday won the support of his co-members and will lead the party to its General Assembly on August 24 – and a likely merger with fellow royalist party Funcinpec.

“I thank the prince for resigning from his position . . . in order to open the way for us to unite the royalists,” he said yesterday.

“I was elected acting president of the [new party] and will help to stabilise party affairs before moving towards a merger with Funcinpec on August 25.

“We will integrate all levels of the party’s infrastructure into Funcinpec, and we will work under Funcinpec.”

In Cambodia, the royalist movement has been dealt another blow, with Prince Norodom Ranariddh announcing his resignation from politics for a second time.

Last time it was in 2008, after a scandal involving the sale of the Funcinpec party's headquarters.

He eventually received a royal pardon, and in late 2010 made a comeback with a self-named party he said was committed to re-uniting the Royalists.

That attempt now appears to have collapsed, and along with it, the political career of the Prince.

Two of Cambodia’s royalist parties are to merge, top officials from both sides said Monday, after a key leader seen as an obstacle to the unification announced his retirement last week.

The Norodom Ranariddh Party (NRP) will be dissolved and its members merged into the Funcinpec party, the only group in a coalition with Prime Minister Hun Sen’s ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP).

The Funcinpec party was founded in 1981 by King Norodom Sihanouk. His son Prince Norodom Ranariddh set up the NRP after being ousted from Funcinpec six years ago.

The merger move came Monday after the surprise resignation Friday by the prince as NRP president. He said he was retiring from politics.

"I would like to announce, from now on, that I stop doing politics and will not take responsibility for any work and decisions made by the Norodom Ranariddh Party anymore," he said in a statement.

Ranariddh on Friday announced that he was quitting politics for a second time after he was perceived as an obstacle to a merger between royalist parties.

The son of beloved former king Norodom Sihanouk agreed in May to combine his eponymous Norodom Ranariddh Party with Funcinpec in a bid to reinvigorate the royalist movement ahead of next year's general elections.

"I would like to announce, from now on, that I stop doing politics and will not take responsibility for any work and decisions made by the Norodom Ranariddh Party any more," Ranariddh said in a statement.

Top members of the two royalist parties in Cambodia have a message for Prince Norodom Ranariddh: We’re merging, with or without you.

Funcinpec and the party that bears Norodom Ranariddh’s name, NRP, plan to hold a political congress later this month to reboot merger talks that foundered in recent months over disagreements between Ranariddh and the head of Funcinpec, Nhek Bun Chhay.

Chhay and Sao Rany, secretary-general of NRP, told the Post yesterday the royalist parties will hold the congress even if Ranariddh remains opposed.

Funcinpec party leader Nhek Bun Chhay marked the 15th anniversary of what he called the “factional fighting” of 1997, and what many have called a bloody coup that swept Prime Minister Hun Sen to power, by sharing some of his own experiences yesterday and blaming the entire mess on Prince Norodom Ranariddh.

He said that Ranariddh, who was then sharing the prime minister’s seat with Hun Sen, had asked Bun Chhay to meet with Khmer Rouge leader Khieu Samphan without telling Hun Sen.

“This point caused uncertainty in the coalition government,” he said.

“Samdech Hun Sen asked to meet with Samdech Krom Preah [Ranariddh] to have a talk about these issues, but Samdech Krom Preah did not agree and went abroad. That’s what caused the event of July 5-6, 1997.”

Synopsis: Nhiek Bun Chhay announced at a press conference that Funcinpec will not organize a commemoration for those (Funcinpec activists) who died during the 5-6 July 1997 event, following a decision made by the party leadership and its permanent committee. Nhiek Bun Chhay claimed that, in order to avoid too many commemoration ceremonies, only one commemoration will be held on Pchum Ben occasion only. Nhiek Bun Chhay squarely placed the blame on Norodom Ranariddh, his former boss, for trying to bring equity between Funcinpec forces – counting 20,000 soldiers – and CPP forced – counting 110,000 soldiers. Nhiek Bun Chhay alleged that Ranariddh tried to import armaments to Cambodia and ordered him to meet with Khieu Samphan behind Hun Xen’s back. When Hun Xen tried to meet with Ranariddh, the latter avoided the meeting and left the country, thus the ensuing carnage on 5-6 July 1997, Nhiek Bun Chhay claimed. Nhiek Bun Chhay added: “Samdech Krom Preah [Ranariddh] should be courageous enough to accept a large share of responsibility in this event.”

Synopsis: The plan to merge Funcinpec and the Norodom Ranariddh Party (NRP) into a single political party in order to partake in the upcoming general election seems to go awry and it could even lead to each party walking out from another. The reason? They do not agree on a number of points in this merger, that’s what one high-ranking party official told DAP-news. One sticking issue is the fact that both parties do not agree on the merged party’s political stance in the future. Furthermore, plan for a congress for the united merger is now tossed out. Could it be that Hun Xen did not poor enough cash to sweeten the merger for it to take place?

The on-again, off-again dance between Funcinpec and the Norodom Ranariddh Party finally concluded yesterday, with the two opposition royalist parties agreeing to merge following the June 3 commune elections.

Prime Minister Hun Sen of the ruling Cambodian People’s Party met with the leaders of the parties yesterday morning to encourage them to agree to the merger, officials said.

Shortly after the meeting, Funcinpec secretary-general Nhek Bun Chhay and Prince Norodom Ranariddh signed an agreement to join forces under the auspices of the Funcinpec party to run in the national elections in July next year.

Cambodian royalist political parties merge for next year's elections

Phnom Penh (Cambodia), May 24 (Xinhua): The royalist Funcinpec party and the Norodom Ranariddh party on Thursday signed an agreement to merge as a Funcinpec party to re-unite royalists for the parliamentary elections in July next year.

The agreement was signed between Nhik Bun Chhay, executive president of the Funcinpec party and Prince Norodom Ranariddh, president of Norodom Ranariddh party.

Under the agreement, Prince Norodom Ranariddh will be the president of the merged party and Nhik Bun Chhay will be the vice- president.

The two parties won two seats each in the 123-parliamentary seats in the elections in July 2008.
