Source had indicated that Prime Minister Hun Sen had a phone conversation with Mr. Cheam Channy who is currently incarcerated in military jail. The Prime Minister asked Mr. Cheam Channy about his wellbeing and promised that he will intervene for his full release before the Cambodian New Year in April, following his [jail] sentence reduction by four years.

Mr. Son Chhay, the leader of a group of members of parliament from the Sam Rainsy Party who visited Mr. Cheam Channy in jail on the morning of Friday 03 February, declared to journalists that this will open a new chapter.

Mr. Son Chhay said: "Samdech Hun Sen called Mr. Cheam Channy by phone and asked about his wellbeing, if he is good health or not, and he told him not to be worry too much and that he should take good care of his health. During the conversation with Mr. Cheam Channy, Samdech Hun Sen seemed to be lenient, and he said that there is no need to have three steps [for his release], and that only two are necessary. Now the sentence is reduced by four years, in the next step, it will end altogether. H.E. Cheam Channy personally thanked Samdech Hun Sen."

Mrs. Chum Seang Leng, the wife of Mr. Cheam Channy, told RFA on Friday 03 February: "I deeply thank the King who reduced my husband's sentence by four years. I ask the King to pardon my husband next time."

One source had indicated that Prime Minister Hun Sen had promised to eliminate the remaining two years sentence before the coming Cambodian New Year.

Mr. Cheam Channy was originally sentenced to seven years of jail term. So far, he had been jailed one year.

After the King had reduced his sentence by four years following the Prime Minister request, the Asian Human Right Watch based in Hong Kong issued a statement welcoming the sentence reduction but it said that this is lacking still because Mr. Cheam Channy is innocent.

Mr. Cheam Channy, an opposition party MP, was arrested on 03 February 2005, and was incarcerated in military jail after his parliamentary immunity was lifted. He was later sentenced by the Phnom Penh court on 08 and 09 August 2005 to seven years of jail term after being accused of forming a [shadow] army to overthrow the government of Prime Minister Hun Sen.
