The lawyer of Mr. Sam Rainsy and President of the Cambodian National Research Organization [CNRO] had an audience with the King to request his intervention for the pardon of opposition party members on the morning of 02 February.
In an interview to journalists in front of the Royal Palace shortly following his audience with King Norodom Sihamoni, Som Chandina, Mr. Sam Rainsy's lawyer, provided the goal of his audience with the King. He said that he requested the King to intervene for the pardon and the annulment of the accusations made on members of the opposition [SRP] party.
Mr. Som Chandina said: "the most important was that we requested the King to intervene with the Royal Government for Samdech [Hun Sen] to be indulgent and cancel all lawsuits, release Mr. Cheam Channy, and abandon the accusations on H.E. Sam Rainsy in order to allow him to return back to Cambodia."
Mr. Som Chandina indicated that the King agreed to his propositions and will send all the requests to Prime Minister Hun Sen, even though he (the King) does not have any power.
The request for the King's intervention in the pardon and the annulment of the accusations made on opposition members and human rights activists was criticized by Mr. Khieu Kanharith, the minister of information and government spokesman. He said that all this action could lengthen the jail sentence of Mr. Cheam Channy.
Mr. Khieu Kanharith said: "I say Cheam Channy could probably stay [in jail] longer. He [Som Chandina] wants his own recognition more than he wants the release of Cheam Channy. If one wants [to meet the King] for real, there is no need to tell anyone, just go meet him in secret." Dr. Heang Thirith who also had an audience with the King on the morning of 02 February, confirmed the words of the King who promised to intervene with Prime Minister Hun Sen to end the disputes inside the country. Dr. Heang Thirith also mentioned that the King will allow his group future audiences if further problems arise.
