Hun Sen seeks removal of U.N. envoy for human rights in Cambodia
(Kyodo) - Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on Wednesday suggested that U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan remove his representative for human rights in Cambodia, saying the envoy lacks knowledge on the country.
Hun Sen said in a forum that Yash Ghai, special representative of the U.N. secretary general for human rights in Cambodia, does not really know Cambodia, and thus he should be removed or resign from the position.
His remarks came after Yash Ghai said Tuesday upon concluding his second visit to Cambodia that power has seemingly been concentrated in only "one individual," implicitly referring to Hun Sen, who has been in power for more than two decades.
"I have talked to judges, politicians, and everyone is so scared, and it seems that everything depends on one individual. That is not really a precondition under which human rights can flourish," Yash Ghai told reporters in Phnom Penh.
The special envoy said he was "particularly concerned that executive interference in the work of the judiciary continued, for example, through the 'iron fist' policy, and that the Supreme Council of Magistracy was unable to carry out its crucial role of safeguarding the integrity and independence of the judiciary."
Concerning the newly established National Authority to resolve land disputes, Yash Ghai said it resembles a policy-making body, rather than an independent institution that would be in a position to examine evidence and provide solutions in an effective and credible way.
Hun Sen said "I am asking Professor Yash Ghai to keep studying (about Cambodia). His current knowledge is not enough to work with the Cambodian people because he does not really know Cambodia."
The premier also said he considers U.N. human rights monitors as "long-term tourists" in Cambodia.
No one at the U.N. office for human rights in Cambodia was available for comments on Hun Sen's remarks.

Yes,I agree. We beg your swift action and support in removing Hun Sen; the tyrant; and his dictatorial regime from poverty stricken Cambodia. UN,China and US got to help Cambodia to rid Iron Grip.
