Cambodian King starts Laos, Vietnam visit

Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni left Phnom Penh on Tuesday to start his state visits to Laos and Vietnam at the invitation of Laotian President Khamtay Siphandone and Vietnamese President Tran Duc Luong.

Cambodian Senate President Chea Sim, acting National Assembly President Heng Samrin and Prime Minister Hun Sen, as well as the members of the royal family and other government officials saw the King off at the Phnom Penh International Airport.

"It is the first time for the King to visit our two close neighboring countries," Foreign Minister Hor Namhong told reporters at the airport. "I believes that the historical visit will be sure to further consolidate and strengthen our friendly cooperation relations on politics and economy," he said.

The King's visit to Vietnam will be on March 16 to 18 after ending his Laos visit.

During the visit to Laos, King Norodom Sihamoni will have a bilateral meeting with Khamtay Siphandone, President of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, according to the statement of the Cambodian Foreign Ministry.

The King will also grant Royal Audiences to Laotian National Assembly President Samane Vignaket and Prime Minister Bounnhang Vorachith.

While in Vietnam, King Norodom Sihamoni will have a meeting with Tran Duc Luong, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Besides, the King will also grant Royal Audiences to Nong Duc Manh, Secretary General of the Communist Party of Vietnam and Prime Minister Phan Van Khai, who paid an official visit to Cambodia on March 6 and 7.

"This first-ever state visit to Vietnam by the King of Cambodia will give a new impetus for the concerted efforts of the two countries to deepen their ties of good neighborliness, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation and long-term stability," said the joint statement by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and Vietnamese counterpart Phan Van Khai at the end of Phan's visit Phnom Penh.
