Princess Norodom Vacheara judges that Funcinpec should change its name. The princess who boycotted yesterday the National Assembly session to protest the removal of her brother, Prince Sirivudh, from all his positions in the government, judges that the Funcinpec, as it is today, no longer aspires to the principles of its founding father, former monarch Norodom Sihanouk. Now that prince Sirivudh had resigned from his position as interim president of the Funcinpec, and that the secretay-general position is filled in by Nhiek Bun Chhay, Princess Veacheara seems to consider that the party is no longer under the leadership of a royal family member. “This is nonsense. And it goes against the principles which guided the hero-king Norodom Sihanouk. That us why, it’s best to change the name of the party, in order to restore the honor of His Majesty [Norodom Sihanouk], the Phnom Penh MP argued.

Nevertheless, Nhiek Bun Chhay finds this proposal inappropriate. “Under the current situation, the name of the party is not an issue. The structure of the party has not changed. Prince Ranariddh [currently staying overseas for an indeterminate length] remains the president of the party, and the general secretariat is occupied by someone descended from a family of simple citizens,” he argued while assuring that he was in contact “almost daily” with his president in order to manage to party.

Before leaving for France last week, prince Ranariddh had named Norodom Sirivudh as the interim president of the party for the management of the [party] business during his absence. The creation of this position which did not exist in the statute of the party, occurred during a time when the secretary-general designated by Prince Ranariddh – Norodom Chakrapong – was being contested. Nowadays, the deal has changed somewhat because it was finally Nhiek Bun Chhay who has been nominated as secretary-general whereas Norodom Sirivudh is the one who surrenders his title of interim president.

According to Serei Kosal, an important Funcinpec member, the confusion at the leadership of the party does not just justify the discussion on the name issue at this time. “The important today is to work to reactivate the party. We must get out from the situation which prevails for a year, a period which the directing committee did not meet,” Serei Kosal commented. In passing, Serei Kosal does not regret the departure of Norodom Sirivudh from the interim presidency. “He is not competent and he led the party to defeat,” he judges.
