Asia Economic Forum kicks off in Cambodia

04/26/2006

Phnom Penh (VNA) - The 2nd Asia Economic Forum, themed "Bridging development gaps in East Asia: Vision, Strategic Direction, and Plan of Action", kicked off in Phnom Penh on April 25, with the participation of representatives from many countries in the fields of education, research and the private sector.

The meeting is aimed at discussing ways to help countries in the region overcome challenges and impending obstacles and outline visions and plans of action for the future.

Addressing the forum, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said that economies in the region have reached relatively high economic growth rates, with an average of 7.6 percent in 2005, however, they will still face many challenges such as increasing oil prices, the spreading bird flu pandemic and imbalances of payments. These factors threaten the development of the global economy in general and the Asian economy in particular.

PM Hun Sen noted that Cambodia and regional countries will have to re-consider their targets and directions of development as well as plans of action of each country and the region as the whole.-Enditem
