Phnom Penh (dpa) - Octogenarian former Cambodian king, Norodom Sihanouk, returned home Friday following cancer treatment in China, appearing remarkably sprightly, in very good spirits and dispelling fears his health may be in decline.

The mercurial Sihanouk, who abdicated in October 2004 in favour of his son, King Norodom Sihamoni, arrived at Phnom Penh International Airport late Friday afternoon accompanied by his wife, Norodom Monineath.

He declined to speak to waiting reporters, joking that he could not hear them, but strode confidently and quickly into a waiting car before being whisked back to his palace, which he left last December for a course of chemotherapy for colon cancer in Beijing.

"He looks healthy and strong. Sihanouk is a symbol of Khmer unity and national reconciliation," his cousin, former co-defense minister Sisowath Sirivudh told reporters.

The 83-year-old former monarch was greeted on the tarmac by about 100 dignitaries, including his son, King Sihamoni, and Prime Minister Hun Sen.

A spokesman for Sihanouk, Om Daravuth, said the former king was expected to remain in Cambodia for around two months before returning to China for further tests.

Sihanouk's wife's birthday celebrations are scheduled for June 16, however Daravuth said at this stage it was unlikely Sihanouk would remain in the country until own birthday, October 31.

The mercurial Sihanouk is still regarded as a living god by many Cambodians who will celebrate his return in apparent good health as a signal of political stability.

Sihanouk had cited his reasons for his sudden and unexpected abdication as ill health and old age.

However despite his abdication, the man who has also enjoyed careers in music, film and politics during his lifetime and survived the Khmer Rouge regime as a captive in his own palace remains a central figure in Cambodia's social, cultural and political scene.

King Father!!!

I, your truly loyal servant, love you but can not help you

May be you will be the OBJECT of the Khmer Rouge tribunal because China would not defend you after his affairs, no one could save you

Because all Cambodians people know that :

- You are accomplice with youns during the vietnam war

- You are :
-maker of wars in cambodia during 1970-1975,
-maker of killing almost 2 million of cambodian people during 1975-1979,
-you delivered Cambodian land to vietnam by signature

-You are a great cheater

So You are clear that you are a killer of almost two million of cambodian people

Say no more 4:15am, you're so right on, you got Kings right on his balls. If I were King, I would feel very embarrass and ashame right now of what people say to me of what I've done to Cambodia and I would never step back in Cambodia for what I've done. But this King got the nerve and still think he got all his supports from us Khmer after he brought hell upon us. Shame on you King Kong!!
