Prince Norodom YuvaneathPhnom Penh (dpa) - Senior palace official and half-brother of Cambodia's King Norodom Sihamoni said Friday that he opposed a trial of former leaders of the Khmer Rouge regime, saying the 1975 to 1979 massacre was the result of foreign political manipulation.
Prince Norodom Yuvaneath, a son of former king Norodom Sihanouk, told reporters he believed a trial of former leaders of the ultra-Maoist regime, blamed for the deaths of up to two million Cambodians during its brief but bloody rule, was against the interests of national reconciliation.
The Supreme Royal Advisor said the rise of the Khmer Rouge was the result of manipulation by outside countries, including neighbouring Vietnam and Thailand. He said he felt pitting Cambodians against Cambodians again during a trial for crimes committed by the Khmer Rouge was not in the national interest.
"I really do not want to see a Khmer Rouge trial," Yuvaneath said at Phnom Penh International Airport, minutes before his father Sihanouk returned to Cambodia from cancer treatment in China.
"We had a war because of foreign interests ... we fought amongst Khmer people to serve only international interests and gave up our own national interests," he said.
"We are Buddhists. We follow the Buddhist way. No Cambodian by nature wants to do bad."
The proposed joint UN-Cambodian government tribunal to try former Khmer Rouge leaders will only examine crimes committed between 1975 and 1979, before Vietnamese-backed troops overthrew the regime, and does not take into account any political events preceding or following that period.
Critics of a trial have said the scope of the trial is not broad enough because its timeframe is so limited.
But trial advocates say the majority of atrocities, committed by one of the most brutal regimes of the last century, occurred within that period and those responsible for genocide and human rights abuses should be held accountable.
The last Khmer Rouge guerilla fighters were only defeated by government troops in 1998.
Neither King Norodom Sihamoni nor his father, Norodom Sihanouk, have ever directly commented about the impending trials.

There are no such thing as isolated event in the killing of Cambodian people! There are many events that happens that led up to the genocide of Cambodian people! It seems that the foreigners have the right to come into Cambodia to make war and started the killing and at the end make Cambodian people responsible for it! I think this is not fair!

According to some books that I read, 60 thousands Khmers were killed during Lon Nol's civil war. It was engineered by Nixon and Kissinger in 1970 when Khmer was at its peak of music, movie, sport, and exporting rice. One school teacher's salary can comfortably support a family of 10... Please take Kissinger and China to trial.

The Cambodian story go like this! Once upon a time, Cambodia was a prosperous neutral country under King Sihanuok. Then Came the superpowerd the free democratic(USA) and the communist(USSR) seeking to divide the world among themselves between the communist block and the democratic block or bipolar world! For example, that why we have East Germany(communist) and West Germany(democratic) and we have North Korea(communist)and South Korea(democratic)and we have North Vietnames(communist) and South Vietname(democratic)!
But there is a problem with this bipolar world! North Vietname under Uncle Ho didn't want his country to be divided and with the help of USSR and China so he set out to destroy the South Vietname backed by USA! The war between North Vietname and South Vietname were raging like a wild fire between 1950 to 1965!
Now the question is how did the Vietname war engulfed Cambodia which is a neutral nation? Remember this! King Sihanuok want Cambodia to remain neutral to be prosperous economically which Cambodia did! King Sihanouk never want to go to war! But the Superpowers(USSR,China,and USA) have agenda of their own!
The USA who is an ally of the South Vietname want Cambodia to join to fight the Vietcong of North Vietname an ally of the USSR and China! And King Sihanouk refused because Cambodia had been at peace and economically growing and Cambodian people were happy and what more could he want!
So the South Vietnamese knowing that Cambodia is neutral country and possess no credible weapons and so they set out to destroy Cambodia neutrality by launch a regular raid into Cambodia territories as an excuse in persuing the Vietcong but many times it is the Cambodian people who are the Victim not the Vietcong! King Sihanouk saw what South Vietname army had done and he couldn't do anything about it and he felt helpless! Remember! If you are a neutral country, you are not allow to have any weapons!
So King Sihanuok came up with a plan! The plans were to allow the Vietcong of the North Vietname to attack the South Vietname every time the South Vietname enter Cambodia territory and that why the Ho Chi Minh exist from here on!
Now the Cambodian neutrality is destroyed completely by inviting the Vietcong into Cambodian territory! American B-52 bombers flew over Cambodia on a mission to destroy the Vietcong but only Cambodian people died! Then Lon Nol came into the picture! With the help of the CIA, General Lon Nol overthrew King Sihanuok for good! Thank to General Lon Nol now Cambodia officially enter the Vietnam War! The rest is history!

You are abit right, but you missed something. Actually i accept that cambodian war is created by all the super power country or we can say the block communist and democracy. There are may mystery that have been goig along the war. there may have a political failure attempting by the King himself or the lost of the political game playing between king Sihanouk and Hochiming. This is the big mistake that the king had made if he has involed in this stagedy.
I am young, but according to the history that i have read, there have been many problem after the second world war because the UN is not strong enought to protect the small country like us. So may powerful country tried to swallow the small one, and the follow of the cold war, it even worst for the poor country like us.

You know I when I think about the Vietname War. If these Vietcong or the Vietnamese kill each other on their land and Cambodia would be involved in the first place. But what happened is the Vietcong kept running into neutral Cambodia for refuge from American jet figthers and bombers and the South Vietnamese kept pursuing the Vietcong into Cambodia territory and killed Cambodian people in the process.
Now If I were King of Cambodia and to see my people being killed and my territory is being violated and I said fuck neutrality! If nobody respect Cambodian neutrality and the hell with it! I would invite a powerful friend to help me out!
But you know too often, Friend tend to betray friend! This is what happened with China! China betray King Sihanuok by helping the Khmer Rouge to take over Cambodia and the Khmer Rouge betray King Sihanouk by put him under house arrest and started the killing field. I don't know why these Cambodian leader fail to see what is it for Cambodian people and nation! Don't these Cambodian leaders have the so called "National Interest?" I guess these Cambodian don't have any national interest that why Cambodia is in a state of limbo.

Khmers Rouge trail is surely coming next year. The UN is now urgently working on replacing some of those judges that are incompetent and lack of integrity.

Believe me the trial never happen soon for real, unless there is only the fake one that gonna fool the publics and the innocents, the world, even the UN. Let me try to clear about a little bit more. The UN, the US, and others freedom countries understood much about the war, the crime agianst khmer innocents, but how should they help if YOUR own country leaders won't do something about it. Why? everyone knew why?..like in Iraq as example, the trial going very ruff, but they still do for the sake of freedom ,and fair!...what about khmer, why is too long?.well The Un wanted to speed this up a long time ago, but this is a very difficult issue, b/c the UN knew that it is not easy to deal with the country like us/Cambodia/srok khmer.
