A lawyer for You Saravuth, editor of Sralanh Khmer newspaper, said Monday that he has filed a lawsuit accusing Prime Minister Hun Sen's nephew Hun To of threatening his client’s life, and is seeking $7500 in compensation.

Lawyer Chhit Sarith said the lawsuit, filed in Phnom Penh Municipal Court, accuses Hun To and several others of inciting the attempted murder of his client, though he conceded that no such attempt was ever made.

"On behalf of my client, I lodged a complaint [on Monday] morning against Okhna Hun To for threatening my client’s life and incitement to an attempted murder," Chhit Sarith said.

You Saravuth has said that Hun To threatened him after the pro-Sam Rainsy Party newspaper, whose name means Love Khmer, ran an anonymously sourced story alleging that Hun To and RCAF Deputy Commander in Chief Kun Kim had grabbed thousands of hectares of land.

Chhit Sarith said his client’s allegations were partly based on a phone call he received from Hun To on June 19, in which Hun To allegedly said that he knew where You Saravuth was and that he could not escape.

"Want to escape? You will not be able to. I will seek the means to meet you," Hun To said, according to a copy of the lawsuit.

In a subsequent meeting in Phnom Penh the same day, Hun To told You Saravuth that had he printed the story in question five years ago, more would have occurred, though he did not elaborate, according to the complaint.

Chhit Sarith admitted that Hun To had not explicitly threatened his client’s life, but said that this was the implication of his alleged remarks.

Hun To has said that he has filed a lawsuit against the newspaper for defamation.

"I did not threaten the editor. I only asked him what evidence he has to back up his story. Let's face the court all together and let the court judge," he said Monday.

He added that You Saravuth may be falsely claiming to have been threatened so he can claim asylum.

Municipal Court Prosecutor Ouk Savouth said he had not received a copy of You Savaruth's lawsuit, while Deputy Prosecutor Ngeth Sarath declined comment.
