More than 100 Free Trade Union leaders representing workers at 90 garment factories agreed Sunday to strike for higher wages on July 3, FTU President Chea Mony said. At a meeting at FTU headquarters, the unionists agreed to begin the strike promptly at 7 am, he said. "The government does not raise workers' wages, so we must go on strike" unless a solution is found before that date, he said. Cheath Khemara, labor issue officer for the Garment Manufacturers Association of Cambodia said that garment factories in Cambodia are not making enough money to raise salaries. He added that he did not believe the government would allow the strike to proceed. Government spokesman Khieu Kanharith could not be reached for comment The Cambodian Independent Teachers' Association also plans to participate in the strike.
