Ranariddh Delays Return, Blames Political Plotting

Funcinpec President Prince Norodom Ranariddh has postponed his return to Cambodia after learning that several party officials have been plotting to replace him with Funcinpec Secretary-General Nhiek Bun Chhay, his spokesman said Sunday. The prince had intended to return on June 17, but has now decided to wait until the case has been fully investigated, Chea Chanboribo said. Although seven Funcinpec members had been accused of plotting to replace the prince, only two—both of whom are advisers to Nhiek Bun Chhay—are now being held responsible, said former Funcinpec ambassador Ok Socheat. He identified the pair as So Chhy and Min Saroeun, adding that Nhiek Bun Chhay was not involved in the plot. Prince Norodom Chakrapong said he has had both men write confessions, which he has forwarded to Prince Ranariddh. Whether they are punished is up to Prince Ranariddh, he said So Chhy and Min Saroeun could not be reached for comment.
