A senior FUNCINPEC [National United Front for an Independent, Neutral, Peaceful, and Cooperative Cambodia] official disclosed on 12 June that Samdech Krom Preah Norodom Ranariddh "might return to Cambodia before 18 June," when the birthday of the queen mother [Norodom Monineath Sihanouk] would be celebrated. Moreover, the prince was also "considering changing his party's name from FUNCINPEC to the Samdech Krom Preah Party [SKPP--koneakpak samdech krom preah] on the basis of his popularity," he added. This is according to a report by Konthea published in the 13 June edition of the pro-government Cambodian daily newspaper Phnom Penh Reaksmei Kampuchea.
Aok Socheat, a senior FUNCINPEC official and former ambassador to the Philippines, told Reaksmei Kampuchea on 12 June that, the report said, he contacted Prince Norodom Ranariddh in late May when he was in Paris. He added that at a meeting, he proposed to the prince that the party's name be changed from FUNCINPEC to the SKPP and that "Samdech Krom Preah said it was a good idea, but he needed to study it and consult with elder FUNCINPEC members first."
According to what Aok Socheat said, the report added, the desire to change the party's name from FUNCINPEC to the SKPP was "because the prince's popularity was great and because some laissez-faire FUNCINPEC officials were making FUNCINPEC detestable."
Aok Socheat "denied the report about the creation of a new political party for Samdech Krom Preah," the report said. He added, "We do not need creating a new party, because nobody is against him."
Aok Socheat also said that Prince Ranariddh "planned to return to Cambodia before 18 June in order to take part in the celebration of the queen mother's birthday." However, he said, "We do not know if the confrontation between Nhoek Bun-Chhai and Samdech Mohissara Norodom Chakkrapong may affect Samdech Krom Preah's decision to return or what." Moreover, Aok Socheat explained that the FUNCINPEC Party did not split up and was not on its way to disintegration as claimed by the Sam Rainsy Party [SRP] in its attacks."
Aok Socheat also criticized the SRP, the report added. He said the SRP, which used to accused Prime Minister Hun Sen of being corrupt, dictatorial, and so forth, "but now Sam Rainsy has agreed to hand over power to Samdech Hun Sen 100 percent." He regarded the action "devoid of the logic."
Elaborating on Prince Ranariddh's delayed return to Cambodia, Aok Socheat mentioned that, the report said, it was because the prince "wanted to wait and see which party officials were against him and which party officials were still loyal to him. Moreover, the prince also wanted all of the FUNCINPEC members to realize which FUNCINPEC officials were disloyal."
