Funcinpec President Prince Norodom Ranariddh has given his backing to a campaign by party officials who want party Secretary-General Nhiek Bun Chhay to step down from his position as deputy prime minister, according to a letter obtained Wednesday.
Prince Ranariddh's spokesman Chea Chanboribo, former ambassador Ok Socheat and royalist senior minister Serei Kosal issued a June 30 statement calling for the move, saying that Nhiek Bun Chhay's position in government is preventing him from adequately serving his party.
"The party's leaders should examine the request I myself think it is a correct request," Prince Ranariddh wrote to the officials on Sunday.
At least eight Funcinpec officials issued the statement claiming that if Nhiek Bun Chhay were to step down from the government, people would feel more confident in Funcinpec.
Serei Kosal said in an interview that Nhiek Bun Chhay must choose between the two: his party or his position.
"He must resign from one position," Serei Kosal said.
He accused Nhiek Bun Chhay of spending too much time trying to make Prime Minister Hun Sen happy, adding that CPP Secretary-General Say Chum is a more appropriate example of how a party secretary-general should behave, as he does not hold a government position.
Government spokesman and Information Minister Khieu Kanharith said the CPP will not interfere with Funcinpec's internal matters, but added that Nhiek Bun Chhay works well with the CPP.
"Nhiek Bun Chhay has built good cooperation between the two parties," he said.
Nhiek Bun Chhay and his spokesman Nouv Sovathero could not be reached for comment.
Koul Panha, director of the Committee for Free and Fair Elections, said the campaign likely stems from the ongoing power struggle inside Funcinpec rather than a desire to reform the party.

No one can quit Nhek Bun Chhay from his positions : deputy prime minister and president of Funcipec party.
If anyone asks him which one he chooses,he will answer he choose "all".
