PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) - The bodies of two women - one of them pregnant - were pulled from the Mekong River on Monday, two days after their boat sank during a storm, police said.
The women, aged 20 and 40, were traveling with 14 other villagers across the river to a farm on an island about 15 kilometers (9 miles) east of the capital Phnom Penh on Saturday, said police officer Thong Sopheak.
As the boat left, it was suddenly struck by a strong wind and capsized about 100 meters (yards) from shore, he said.
A passing speedboat rescued all but the two women, who disappeared under the current of the river, he said.
Their bodies were retrieved Monday from the water about 10 kilometers (6 miles) away from the site where the boat sank, Thong Sopheak said.
Nhim Vanda, a deputy director of the National Committee for Disaster Management, said the water level in the Mekong has not reached an alert level yet but that seven people have so far died in the flood-related incidents.
Parts of the Cambodian countryside are now flooded because of seasonal torrential rain and the swelling of the Mekong River.
