Kompong Cham Provincial Court on Wednesday ordered three women released from jail, offering each of them a six-month suspended sentence as punishment for stealing several kilograms of latex from a rubber plantation, Deputy Prosecutor Sam Sarin said Wednesday. Police arrested two Ponhea Krek district villagers, Vann Samy, 30, and her niece Soeun Phon, 25, on June 15 and a Dambe district woman, Soeun Vy, 20, on May 20, according to local NGO Adhoc investigator Neang Sovat, who had been following the hearings. Soeun Vy was accused of stealing 7 kg of rubber resin from the forest floor of the rubber plantation, Neang Sovat said, adding that Soeun Vy claims she only took a half-kilogram. Neang Sovat welcomed the court ruling, issued by Judge Plang Chhlam, and said that they deserved to be released because of the low severity of the crime. "We worry about other villagers being thrown in jail for minor crimes that they shouldn't be jailed for," he said. Deputy Prosecutor Sam Sarin added that the villagers were arrested after several warnings by the plantation owner to stop stealing the resin.
