Construction workers at Wat Phnom Tuesday morning dug up a skeleton of unknown gender that could be as much as a century old, police officials said. Workers found the body around 7 am after digging about a meter underground to lay the foundations of a new ornamental bridge on the eastern side of Wat Phnom, said Sok Bunlay, Wat Phnom commune police chief. "It could be a hundred-year-old skeleton but we have no idea of its sex because the workers reburied it for fear that its soul could not go to paradise if it was damaged or allowed to be broken," he said. The skeleton was found underneath steps that had not been disturbed in decades. After the skeleton was reburied, local residents brought candles and incense in hopes that the departed soul would bring them good luck, according to Hao Sinith, Wat Phnom commune chief. "It is not a new skeleton and it is not related to any murder or killing because these steps were built hundreds of years ago," he said.
