The Funcinpec party urgently issued a statement in the middle of the night on Friday 04 August expressing its strong determination to preserve the political friendship with the CPP.
The statement issued under the name of the Prince Norodom Ranariddh rejects the political alliance with the Sam Rainsy Party through the formation of the Alliance of Nationalists.
The announce which was read by a Funcinpec party official to RFA, stressed that they (Funcinpec) still maintain a close friendship alliance with the CPP: “Funcinpec underscores its political goal as follows:
(1) Funcinpec is pursuing its cooperation in the alliance with the CPP as stipulated in the agreement of cooperation letter dated 30 March 2004 and signed by Prince Norodom Ranariddh, president of Funcinpec, Samdech Chea Sim, president of the CPP, and Samdech Hun Sen, vice president of the CPP;
(2) Funcinpec has no policy of creating an alliance with the Sam Rainsy Party.
Any information related to the alliance with the Sam Rainsy Party reflect only personal individual opinions only.”
Nhiek Bun Chhay, Funcinpec secretary-general, said that the statement was urgently issued after a talk was held between prince Ranariddh and prime minister Hun Sen on Friday.
Nhiek Bun Chhay said: “Today, the prince contacted to … reach the prime minister to ask about his security issue upon his return home … and the prime minister said that there is no problem for his security but the prime minister wants to see a clear standing by Funcinpec …”
