Sa Kaeo - Another group of Cambodian Muslims entered Thailand yesterday, closely watched by military officers who suspect their travel to the deep South may be linked to the insurgency there.
Military rangers stopped 30 Cambodians for inspection yesterday as they were entering the country through the Aranyaprathet immigration checkpoint in the central province of Sa Kaeo.
They were all women and children, accompanied by one man.
The group planned to travel to work in Sungai Kolok district in Narathiwat, one of three Muslim-dominated provinces in the South, along with Yala and Pattani.
Dema Laeyoh, 22, a resident of the Cambodian province of Kampong Cham, said many Cambodian Muslims were contacted by Islamic religious teachers who promised them jobs in areas near the Thai-Malaysian border, but no one knew what kind of jobs these were.
The religious teachers covered travel expenses for them.
She said the man who escorted her group told the group members to travel separately to avoid military inspection.
Capt Salitapong Kaewpila, leader of the company of military rangers, said their separate travel was suspicious and officers needed to keep a close watch on them.
The group was later allowed to continue on its way.
On Saturday another group of Cambodian Muslims entered the country and officers found they had smuggled various types of medicine and packages of monosodium glutamate flavouring.
Officers suspected they might give the goods to insurgents behind the daily violence in the South.

Cham(Khmer Muslim) are Cambodian or Khmer. They chose to become Khmer due to their lost of their nation, but their language, religion, culture, and their identity are not forgotten. Khmer must not ignor them. They are our brothers and sisters too. They make up the population of Cambodia. Thailand must treat them humanely. Thailand must not escalate its hatred of Muslim toward Cham. To mistreat Cham is to mistreat Khmer. As much as Khmer despise Thai, Thai should think twice about its distrust toward the Cham.
