Rubber workers who recently met with retired King Norodom Sihanouk at the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh did not complain about their working conditions and should not be targeted for retribution, the retired monarch said on Saturday. "These compatriots (men and women) never told me about their 'problems.' Consequently, they deserve no punishment no sanction from anyone," he wrote. Human rights and SRP officials reported last week that two villagers who had recently visited the retired King were arrested on their return to Kompong Cham province. SRP leader Sam Rainsy complained to Norodom Sihanouk last month that plantation workers had been mistreated by their employers. In response, Norodom Sihanouk agreed to receive five groups of 50 plantation workers in July and August Sam Rainsy said Sunday that workers on the July 31 visit had submitted a written complaint to palace officials. "I don't know that the King Father saw it," he said.
