The plight of 16 sailors rescued at sea remains mired in mystery, after they were found floating in a raft launched from their main vessel, with the captain already dead.

According to a local fisherman in Vietnam’s southernmost province of Ca Mau, they discovered the raft early Saturday carrying 16 foreign fishermen.

The raft was then brought to a coastal checkpoint in Ngoc Hien district of Ca Mau province with the rescued crew reportedly safe.

The coast guard retrieved their 50-ton vessel, found floating at sea 7 nautical miles northwest of the checkpoint and brought it to the mainland for investigation.

Initial statements revealed that the foreign vessel, KM-Pincu, had a crew of 18 members including 15 Cambodians and three Thais in a voyage that began in Thailand 20 days ago.

The crew admitted to killing the Thai captain and owner of the vessel, which they claim was done in retaliation for the captain’s brutality.

They accused captain Tay Nhel of assaulting and shooting dead a sailor, and two days later assaulting another, prompting the mutiny.

After killing the captain, the crew navigated the vessel from Indonesian waters towards Cambodia, but ended up stranded off the coast of Vietnam.

Further clouding the incident is the fact that the 16 foreign sailors are without identification papers, and the ship was operating under license granted from Indonesian authorities.

Though the journey began in Thailand, it appeared the vessel was fishing illegally throughout regional waters, according to police.

Police have now contacted the Embassies of Thailand and Cambodia to confirm the identities of the 16 sailors.
