The Students’ Movement for Democracy (SMD) issued an appeal on Saturday 05 August calling for the Cambodian people for vigilance in the installation of border markers between Cambodia and Vietnam which is planned for the beginning of September, even though Cambodian people do not have the right to act at all.
Son Sarat, SMD secretary, said: “In reality, I, as well as the general population, cannot do anything. This [appeal] is just an expression of our opinion because we know that even the King personally signed [the Supplement border treaty to the 1985 border treaty between Cambodia and Vietnam], we don’t have anything to protest about. However, in our name as Cambodian people, we want to express our opinion that we love our lands and waters.”
At the same time, Son Sarat is also calling for the Cambodian government to uphold the national interest in resolving border issues: “[The government] must uphold the importance of the national problem, uphold the importance of the national interest in the installation of the border markers. If the government does not uphold the importance of the nation interest, then the government will be responsible in front of history.”
