TWO RUBBER PLANTATION WORKERS ARRESTED
AFTER SEEING KING-FATHER

Two workers from Boeng Ket rubber plantation (in Stung Trang district, Kompong Cham province) were arrested on August 2 after seeing King-Father Norodom Sihanouk at the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh on July 31. Another worker, Mrs. Chin Voeun, was fired from another rubber plantation also after being received by the King-Father (see our July 28 statement).

The two workers are:
  • Mr. Tang Heng, 45
  • Mr. Hor Nguon Leng, 63.
They live in Andaung Svay village, Prek Kak commune, Stung Trang district, Kompong Cham province. The President of Boeng Ket rubber plantation is Oknha (Lord) Sim Vanna. The latter accuses the two workers of leading hundreds of landless villagers to claim plots of land that, according to the Oknha, belong to his company. The Oknha is angry because the two workers told the King-Father about the land dispute and he used his influence to get them arrested.
