Cambodia urges "collective action" against poverty
Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Hor Namhong said on Monday that the world needs to take collective action to combat poverty which has plagued many developing countries.
Addressing the 61st session of the UN General Assembly in the annual general debate, Hor said there have been little achievements in developing countries since the Millennium Development Goals were adopted in 2000.
This is due to factors "such as the lack of financial and human resources, including the negative impact of globalization which has led to the wide gap between developed countries and the poor nations," he added.
"To deal with global poverty, a comprehensive approach and collective actions are needed," Hor stressed.
He called on developed countries to extend help to their developing partners in terms of ODA (official development assistance), debt relief, market access, transfer of know-how, FDI (foreign direct investment) and so forth, "so that developing countries can catch up with the current globalization and to bridge the gap between peoples and nations in this world.
"The current world is faced with many challenges such as proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, terrorism, environmental degradation and infectious diseases. It is important for us all to keep our commitment to maintain peace and security in the world," he noted.
"I believe that reduction of global poverty and sustainable development in many developing countries in this world are vital for human security and a daunting task for the UN," he said.
