Phnom Penh- A Cambodian father died and his two daughters were seriously ill after the hungry group unwittingly feasted on poisonous toads and their eggs, police said Tuesday. The police chief of Khehouv commune in the Kong Meas district of eastern Kampong Cham province, Kim Houl said the tragedy happened after San Hour, 48, stumbled upon the toads and a clutch of toad eggs while returning home from the fields.
"He saw the toads were big and looked tasty, and the eggs looked good too, so he collected them, took them home and cooked them," he said. "Luckily for the girls, he was very hungry and he didn't want to share so he took most for himself."
Kim Houl said the family fell ill on Sunday with vomiting and severe stomach cramps, but that Hour had taken hours to die an agonizing death. The stricken daughters were aged 24 and four.
The police chief said they were in a stable condition and probably owed their lives to their father's unwillingness to share his prize.
Kim Houl said it appeared that Hour was unaware that toads can carry a deadly toxin which is even more highly concentrated in the eggs, and had apparently believed he had been lucky and stumbled on giant frogs. Frogs are a common source of protein in the Cambodian diet.
