Mr. Sam Rainsy, President of the Sam Rainsy Party, wants Heng Pov to remain overseas.
Cambodge Soir reported the declaration made by Mr. Sam Rainsy who said that Heng Pov, the former Phnom Penh police chief and former advisor of prime minister Hun Sen, should be kept overseas so that the truth on a number of problems in which Heng Pov is involved can be revealed to the public, in particular the assassination of Chea Vichea, the President of the Free Trade Union of Workers of the Kingdom of Cambodia.
Mr. Sam Rainsy said that he does not defend the individual Heng Pov, but that he wants to defend an important witness in the Chea Vichea murder and the grenade attack perpetrated on demonstrators on 30 March 1997.
Sam Rainsy said that if Heng Pov were to be sent back to Cambodia by Malaysia, he will be killed in order to silence him, and this would constitute a major loss for the sake of justice and the victims.
On Friday, the appeal court had suspended the appeal made by Born Samnang and Sok Sam Oeun who had been sentenced by the Phnom Penh municipal court to 20 years of jail term for the killing of Chea Vichea.
The eyewitness of the assassination and who is currently a refugee in the US had told RFA recently that the 2 prisoners are not the real killers of Chea Vichea.
Furthermore, Heng Pov had also admitted that Born Samnang and Sok Sam Oeun are not the killers of Chea Vichea.
The Malaysian court will decide Tuesday 17 Oct on the fate of Heng Pov, whether he will be sent back to Cambodia or allowed to seek refuge in a third country.
