Sam Rainsy, President of the Sam Rainsy Party (SRP), has requested the National Election Committee (NEC) to resolve the closing of voters’ registration offices at a time when the verification of voting list and voting registration is in full swing.

Mr. Sam Rainsy accused some commune councilors and secretaries of not being present at their office regularly.

Mr. Sam Rainsy said: “I believe that this action is not correct. There are exactly 20 days [to verify the voting list and register to vote], we must all work together and do what we can so that the population, especially those who are just reaching voting age, have the ability to register to vote. If the commune councilors and secretaries are not there, who will register the voters? Who will make the corrections necessary to conform with the [voters’] national identification card when the names on the voting list are not correct? Therefore, I call on the National Election Committee to engage in the voting preparation, and the Ministry of Interior to insure that commune chiefs and secretaries are not leaving their position during the registration, and verification and correction process of the voting list.”

In a letter sent to Im Suosdey, NEC president, Mr. Sam Rainsy indicated that the offices which were closed are: Phsar Depo 1, Phsar Depo 2, Phsar Depo 3, and Boeung Kak 1 district, as well as a number of voting secretary offices in Battambang province and in Banteay Meanchey province.

Mr. Sam Rainsy said: “A number of [voting registration] offices in Phnom Penh and Battambang [are closed] and I am receiving other reports from various provincial [voting offices] which are also like this. Therefore, it is necessary for offices which have been closed for one or two days to have extra replacement days with the same number of days. For offices which were closed without announcement, they should have extra open days to compensate for the days lost, so that people are not losing, and that their rights to vote are preserved.”

No response has been provided yet by the NEC on the accusations made by Mr. Sam Rainsy above.
