SRP announces Press Conference to expose irregularities in ongoing voter registration process

October 12, 2006

PRESS CONFERENCE

The Sam Rainsy Party will organize on Friday, October 13, 2006, a press conference to expose the increasingly serious problems encountered during the ongoing voter registration process and to propose urgent measures to address those problems if we want to prevent next year's elections from being a costly farce.

From 9:00 am to 9:30 am, the press conference will be conducted in English by SRP President Sam Rainsy. From 9:30 am to 10:00 am, SRP Members of Parliament from several provinces will expose problems and answer questions in Khmer.

The event will take place at the SRP Headquarters in Phnom Penh.

Latest information:

1- The authorities (National Election Committee, police, commune and village chiefs) have forbidden nationwide the playing of a Sam Rainsy's recording encouraging people to register to vote. Sam Rainsy does not appeal to vote for any political party but only stresses the importance for citizens to get registered as voters so as to be able to cast their ballots and to decide on their future as in any democratic country. The full transcript of the recorded message can be read in Khmer here and in English here.

2- In several voter registration offices in urban areas (such as Kompong Cham city) that are the strongholds of the opposition, the government has brought several hundreds soldiers from neighboring rural districts to register as voters so as to artificially change the balance of power.

3- Countless voter registration offices will be practically closed starting from tomorrow because they have run out of administrative forms (such as "Form 1022" used as receipts for young people who want to register as voters for the first time). "This is bad organization at best, at worst a sabotage, an organized disorder so that people can't register." (Quote from Sam Rainsy in The Cambodia Daily, October 11, 2006). Virtually all CPP supporters identified as such by CPP-affiliated village chiefs have already been registered since the first days of the registration period (October 1st to 20th). Commune and election officials gave them priority over other people.

4- Some of the electoral complaints recently lodged by the SRP can be seen here.

Where do all those compatriotes who want to campaign for the next elections hide themselves? Don't they see any weakness or obstacles during this important voter registration? Where is Rannarith? Where is Thorm Mikor? where is Chak krapong? where is Nhek Bun Chhay? Where is Yu hockry? Where are all the tens parties' leaders who used to join in elections? Don't you all see any wrong things to claim? What kind of compatriotes are your guys? Or you just wait and come to play with people only during elections in order to get some cakes? Why not help each other to see and stimulate this NEC to work better? Sily politician you are!!!!! Especially Prete Rannarith who always reiterates he love the country. Do you really love the country or do you love the pretty girls of the counrty, my dear prete Rannarith? come on if you still want your voice in public. Mr. Sam Rainsy, this is where you should focus on; voting registration, voting procesure, voting education. We have to educate people to know their rights in a simple and clear way. This is how people can ultimately excercise their rights. Everyone must join hands to educate people about this issue. It is a serious matter to win voice of the poeple and eventually will determine the future of our beloved country.
