2007 Budget Slotted at $1.1 Billion: Lawmaker

The government disclosed the total amount budgeted for 2007 on Thursday, but still has not made available the draft budget law despite its approval by the Council of Ministers on Nov 3.
CPP lawmaker Cheam Yeap announced that the Council of Ministers approved $1.1 billion for 2007, 18.8 percent higher than the $926 million in government expenditures approved for 2006.
"The budget is appropriate to the current situation," Cheam Yeap said.
Last year, the National Assembly approved a 2006 budget 20 percent higher than the $772 million approved for 2005.
Cheam Yeap said the government has reduced unnecessary expenditure from both the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Interior by 1 percent each.
He added that the only budget increases this year are in the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Agriculture—each by 3 percent.
Ministry of Agriculture Secretary of State Chan Tong Yves said he was not aware of the increase and declined comment.
SRP lawmaker Son Chhay expressed concern over the government's delay in releasing the budget draft law.
"It is important to let the public know what [is in the law] so we can ensure that the debate in Parliament will have enough time," he said.
"With the complexity of the budget we need time to study it," he added.
