King Marks Anniversary, 53rd Since Independence

King Norodom Sihamoni presided over a crowd of high-ranking CPP officials, Phnom Penh residents and students at Independence Monument on Thursday morning to mark the 53rd anniversary of Cambodia's independence from the French. Min Khin, deputy secretary-general of the Permanent Organizing Committee for National and International Ceremonies, said more than 30,000 people attended the morning event. The King ignited a symbolic flame at the flower-bedecked monument and dozens of white pigeons and balloons were released to celebrate the end of French dominion over Cambodia on Nov 9,1953. "We are going to light fireworks on Thursday and Saturday evening [the end of the three-day commemoration]," said Min Khin, adding that a bigger bash is planned for 2008, the 55th anniversary of independence. Rong Chhun, the president of the Cambodian Independent Teachers' Association, said that despite the day's celebrations of Cambodian independence, Cambodians still do not enjoy true freedom. "There is no freedom of expression,'' he said, "no peace in people's minds."
