Vietnam third at Asian Petanque Champs

Thailand and Cambodia grabbed the top two places at the 10th Asian Petanque Championship which wrapped up Monday in Hanoi. Host Vietnam finished third with a gold and two bronzes.

Thailand won five golds and Cambodia one gold, three silvers, and three bronzes.

Phan Thi Thuy Diem won Vietnam’s sole gold medal in the women’s singles shooting category.

The five-day tournament drew 180 players from 14 Asian countries and territories.

Petanque, or boules, is an outdoor bowling game with metal balls. Players seek to throw the balls as close as possible to a small wooden ball called a cochonnet (piglet). The game is normally played on hard dirt, gravel, grass, or other surfaces.
