A Cambodian Buddhist monk had been disrobed and placed in custody Saturday after a raid on his room in a local pagoda allegedly netted nearly one kilo of high grade opium, police said.

Chief of police for the northern Laotian border province of Steung Treng, Nuon Khoun, said the double life of Tong Sung, 25, was revealed after a local reported that the monk had tried to persuade him to buy the drugs to on-sell in Phnom Penh.

Khoun said an alleged accomplice, Tai On, 23, a local motorbike taxi driver and friend of Sung, had also been taken into custody in connection with the three blocks of opium with a total weight of 990 grams.

"He was disrobed and arrested after a customer reported him," Khoun said by telephone.

The opium was believed to have arrived in Cambodia from the Golden Triangle region via the porous Lao border which spans the Mekong River. If convicted, both men face up to 10 years in prison.
