Over 400,000 first-time voters in 2007 (1)

According to statistics compiled by the Ministry of Interior (Police Department in charge of Statistics and Passports) as of second quarter 2006, Cambodia's population is represented by 12,719,387 inhabitants, of whom 417,061 are 16-year-old, and 402, 744 are 17-year-old. This means there will be over 400,000 first-time voters who could take part in the commune council elections scheduled for 1st April 2007. There are currently 7,293,602 persons who are 18-year-old or older (potential voters). The first-time voters will represent over 5 percent of the electorate in 2007. At the following 2012 commune council elections, the number of first-time voters for that type of elections will reach 2.1 million, representing nearly 25 percent of the electorate, taking into account the projected number of deaths.

Court will summon Kem Sokha again (2)

According to a news program from Voice of America broadcast in Khmer on 22 November, Cambodian Center for Human Rights president Kem Sokha did not show up at a court hearing held on that day in relation to corruption and embezzlement lawsuits filed against him by former CCHR employees who accuse him of stealing their salaries and other financial abuses (KI, 16 November 2006: "Kem Sokha summoned to court"). Kem Sokha, who has allegedly diverted between $300,000 and $400,000 from foreign aid for his own benefit since 2003, has refused to answer any questions from journalists. The Court will probably summon him again by the end of this month.

Ranariddh entangled in corruption scandals (2)

Ousted Funcinpec president prince Norodom Ranariddh is reportedly embroiled in several corruption scandals, some of which appear to be interrelated:
  • Misspending or embezzlement of public funds when he was president of the National Olympic Committee.
  • Controversial award of a $27-million contract for the construction of the National Assembly's new buildings to dubious businessman Ly Chhuong when he was the Assembly's president.
  • Suspicious sale in 2005 of Funcinpec's current headquarters (next to the French embassy) to the same Ly Chhuong for $3.6 million, which Ranariddh has allegedly pocketed, according to a corruption lawsuit filed against him by Funcinpec's current secretary-general Nhiek Bun Chhay.
  • Suspicious land and construction deal in 2005 with the same Ly Chhuong for the erection of Funcinpec's new headquarters on the outskirts of Phnom Penh, for $1.5 million (?) to be paid out of the above $3.6 million, leading now to a land dispute between Ly Chhuong and Funcinpec's new leadership.

If Rannaridh is working as a politician in a western country such as United States or Europe, he would be jailed if found guilty. He is the most corrupted person in Cambodia today. If I were him, I would have resigned and let other people take over my job. Hun Sen should go kick ass right now.
