Hollywood power-couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt made a surprise visit to Cambodia Wednesday, landing in Siem Reap and making a brief detour to Pailin municipality before flying to Phnom Penh in the afternoon, officials said.
Ieng Vuth, deputy governor of Pailin and son of former Khmer Rouge foreign minister Ieng Sary, said the stars arrived from Siem Reap in a red helicopter at 9:30 am to discuss an environmental project planned for the area.
"[Jolie] met me for about 40 minutes" before flying back to Siem Reap, Ieng Vuth said. He also claimed that Jolie has asked him to design the project, which he said covers an area larger than that of her conservation project in Battambang province's Samlot district.
Four other people, including Pitt and a foreign journalist, also arrived in the helicopter, Ieng Vuth said.
Stephan Bognar, executive director of Jolie's aid and conservation venture in Cambodia, the Maddox Jolie Project, said the environmental work in Pailin falls under the MJP.
"We're in discussions [with local officials] right now," about starting the project in Pailin, Bognar said.
He declined to discuss the couple's itinerary in Cambodia.
So Phat, deputy police chief at Phnom Penh International Airport, said a private plane carrying Pitt and Jolie touched down in Phnom Penh at about 3 pm.
"They came with their small private plane," he said.
Ieng Vuth said Jolie told him that her recent dispute with Mounh Sarath, a local NGO director in Battambang, was being resolved.
Earlier this month, the Associated Press quoted Trevor Neilson, an adviser to Jolie, as claiming that Mounh Sarath had misappropriated hundreds of thousands of dollars provided for the MJP while he was manager of the project.
Mounh Sarath, the director of Cambodian Vision in Development denies the allegations. He has also demanded to know why his work with the MJP was been terminated, and accused Jolie of breaking a funding agreement with his organization.
Mounh Sarath said Wednesday that he sent an email to Jolie on Nov 16, requesting a meeting with the actress while she was in Cambodia to discuss his grievances. He added that he has not received a response.
"I don't have any hope that she's going to meet with me," he said.
