63 families from Koh Roka village, Koh Roka commune, Peam Chor district, Prey Veng province, had accused their local authority of land grabbing 9 hectares of their rice field lands where the villagers are currently planting rice on.
Vong Sat, a man from Koh Roka village, said that the village and commune authorities, and armed policemen came to tell them to stop planting crops on their rice fields which they have cultivated for many years already: “I went to plant seeds, they came out with guns accompanied by the local authorities to stop me, they told me to stop planting crops from that day on because they said that the land belong to them.”
Nhem Thoeung, a villager, added: “They warned me that if I set foot on that land, they will arrest and send me to jail.”
Mrs. Huon, the Koh Roka commune chief, explained that the authorities only went to apply the decision made by the provincial congress which stated that the land will be given back to Yim Oeurn, the original owner of the land: “These people came to take over the land belonging to Yim Oeurn, they planted crops on it for one year only. Therefore, the provincial governor issued a decision to the commune and district authorities, as well as the police force to protect Yim Oeurn.”
