Lu Laysreng, Funcinpec first vice-president, warned that the search for popular support in the upcoming April 2007 commune election, the 2 royalist parties [Funcinpec and NRP] will not be successful if they keep on constantly fighting and tearing each other apart.
Lu Laysreng said: “I am calling them to stop tearing each other apart, if they part ways from each other, each side should concentrate on their own work. If they keep on tearing each other apart and go after one another, both of them will be gone. None will be left.”
Lu Laysreng made the declaration following the report that the Norodom Ranariddh Party (NRP), born out the sacrifice made by the Khmer Front Party, has been legally recognized by the Ministry of Interior (MoI) on Tuesday afternoon, and will be able to participate in the upcoming election.
Up to now, supporters of the Funcinpec and NRP parties have been verbally attacking each other, and claiming on each side that they have the largest number of supporters.
Lu Laysreng declared that because Funcinpec is a party formed by former monarch Norodom Sihanouk, he is confident that Funcinpec will remain strong, even though NRP is led by Prince Ranariddh, the son of the former monarch.
Lu Laysreng added: “We can see that this party (Funcinpec) was formed long ago by King-Father, people will still believe that if this party disappears, so does the work of King-father. We can see that people will still support this party which is a party of King-Father.”
Nevertheless, Lu Laysreng said he welcomes NRP, but he requested that the feud and the tearing apart between the two parties be stopped: “I welcome Samdech Krom Preah … and I wish him well with his party.”
