A number of NGOs are demanding that a proper investigation be performed by officials at the National Election Committee (NEC) who recently refused to remove from the voting lists the names of almost 10,000 Vietnamese nationals.
Koul Panha, Comfrel Director, said that if the NEC really has the will to resolve this issue, it should cooperate with political parties to properly investigate the cases before making its decision: “… [O]n this issue, this political matter, they use all kind of pretexts in the book to make the decision.”
Hang Puthea, Nicfec Director, accused the NEC of trying to protect itself by making this decision. Since the NEC is legally [in charge of election preparation and issuing voting cards,] the culprit is the organization which issued the voting cards to all the people suspected of being Vietnamese citizens: “On this matter, it is about who issued all these identification cards [to the people suspected of being Vietnamese citizens], therefore what they did in the past was wrong.”
Thun Sara, Adhoc human rights NGO President, said that the issue of removing names from the voting list is complicated, however, the NEC should investigate on the spot first before holding a hearing to make a decision on who is right and who is wrong.
