Vietnam and Cambodia speed up border marker planting

Vietnam and Cambodia agreed on various technical issues regarding land border delineation and concrete measures to speed up border marker planting at an ad-hoc meeting in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on November 22-23.

The meeting between the two Co-Presidents of the Vietnam-Cambodia Joint Committee on Land Border Delineation and Marker Planting aimed to complete this year the planting of border markers at the remaining six pairs of border gates along their common borderline.

The deadline was set up by the two Prime Ministers at the inauguration of the first border marker planted at the Moc Bai - Ba Vet border-gates in September this year.

At the meeting, Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Vu Dung, who is also Head of the Ministry's Border Department, and Cambodian Senior Minister in charge of border issues Var Kimhong, also discussed a master plan on land border delineation.

The two sides approved a technical regulation on border mapping and plans for planting markers at five pairs of border gates in five southwestern and Central Highlands provinces of Vietnam and their Cambodian neighbours. They are Kien Giang, Binh Phuoc, An Giang, Tay Ninh and Gia Lai provinces of Vietnam and Kampot, Kratie, Ta Keo, Kongpong Cham and Ratanakiri provinces on the Cambodian side.

The two delegations also agreed to assign specialists to conduct surveys on suitable allocations for planting border markers at the above-mentioned border-gates and continue with negotiations on possible allocations for border markers at the pairs of border gates in Dong Thap and An Giang provinces of Vietnam and Pley Veng and Kandal provinces of Cambodia.

Vietnam and Cambodia share seven pairs of international bordergates along their common borderline. The two countries already planted a common border marker between the Moc Bai and Ba Vet bordergates and hope to finish the task at the remaining six pairs of border gates by the end of this year.

Let's hope that the future independent Cambodian leaders will install the Global Positioning System (GPS) technology on those border markers and cross-check with the internationally-recognised map of Cambodia in the U.N. The truth will be revealed whether or not the Hun Sen regime has betrayed its people and given away Khmer land to its neighbouring countries, especially the Eastern neighbour.

Once the truth is established a shame monument, on which the faces of all the traitors will be embedded, should be built in every provincial city and the capital to remind the next generation of Cambodian youth of our dark history and our national loss.
