Ranariddh To Quit Teaching and Focus on party

Looking revitalized and talking tough. Prince Norodom Ranariddh announced Monday that he will quit his university teaching position in France so he can focus on his renewed political efforts in Cambodia.
The prince also urged Funcinpec officials in the Senate, National Assembly and government to jump ship and join his proposed new Norodom Ranariddh Party.
"I will go to my university where I have been teaching for more than 30 years to ask to resign, and will come back to Cambodia to do only politics," Prince Ranariddh told a press conference at Phnom Penh's Hotel Le Royal.
Prince Ranariddh teaches law and political science for two months each year in the French town Aix-en-Provence, his public affairs adviser Ok Socheat said. The prince will soon travel to France to officially tender his resignation, Ok Socheat added.
Prince Ranariddh also warned that if the Interior Ministry does not register his new party, he will officially join Prince Sisowath Thomico's Sangkum Jatiniyum Front Party.
"If I don't receive permission on time [for April's commune election] I will accept the presidency of Prince [Thomico's] party," he said. Prince Thomico sat by Prince Ranariddh during the news conference but did not address reporters.
Prince Ranariddh also took a swipe at Funcinpec Secretary-General Nhiek Bun Chhay, who convened the Funcinpec congress that ousted the prince as party presidency Oct 18.
"I would like to inform Nhiek Bun Chhay that he could steal my party but he could not steal my supporters' hearts," Prince Ranariddh said.
He then did impersonations of Nhiek Bun Chhay, and described him as a "giant card [game] loser."
Prince Ranariddh also thanked Prime Minister Hun Sen for helping Nhiek Bun Chhay end his presidency, saying the move helped identify the prince's loyalists inside Funcinpec.
"Prime Minister Hun Sen helped us to clean out the traitors," the prince said, before predicting a bright future for his new party.
"We have strong feet and the head is also good. But the body is not healthy yet," he said.
Prince Ranariddh said he will never join Hun Sen's ruling CPP in a coalition again, and that working with the party would amount to "political suicide."
"[The CPP] don’t want to cheat us anymore. They have the Sam Rainsy Party and Nhiek Bun Chhay," he said.
Government spokesman and Information Minister Khieu Kanharith said the CPP is not concerned whether Prince Ranariddh joins future coalition governments.
"If he wants to be an opposition party let him be an opposition party," he said.
Funcinpec spokesman Nouv Sovathero said his party's officials are unlikely to be in a rush to quit their government positions to join Prince Ranariddh.
"They won't risk following Prince Norodom Ranariddh," he said. "The leader led the party into decline," he said.
But Prince Ranariddh's new party has the potential to divide Funcinpec's slice of the national vote, said Hang Puthea, director of the Neutral and Impartial Committee for Free Elections in Cambodia.
"The prince could be good at leading an opposition party because he used to be in government and he knows the government's weak points," he said.

The prince seems to be happy for Hun Sen helped him to clean CPP supporters out of his party but he forgets that the next thing he knows there are many more CPP supporters in his new party and Thomico as well.
