Nearly 1,500 shirts and posters featuring messages discouraging domestic violence were distributed to cyclo and motorbike taxi drivers on Friday ahead of this weekend's Water Festival. The NGO Project Against Domestic Violence handed out the materials at Wat Phnom. The shirts, bearing the slogan "non violent culture brings happiness to families," aim to educate the drivers and the general public, said Hor Phally, the NGO's executive director. "We also educated and informed those cyclo drivers to understand that alcohol is the root cause of domestic violence," she added. Sor Soeurn Ol, a cyclo driver from Kompong Cham province, said he used to beat his wife, but stopped three years ago following educational campaigns by NGOs. "I used to beat my wife whenever we had an argument, so we wasted money and time for medical treatment," he said. Huot Chhun, a cyclo driver from Prey Veng province, said he drinks but does not beat his wife, and that men just use alcohol as an excuse. Im Sambath, manager of the Cyclo Center, which offers support to cyclo drivers, said they themselves are highly vulnerable group, and are often robbed or involved in accidents. "Cyclo drivers meet a lot of challenges and earn little income," he said.
