Two Arrested In Shooting At Gas Station

Two men were arrested following the shooting Saturday night of a journalist and his friend at a gas station in Phnom Penh's Chamkar Mon district, police said Monday.

Sroy Nika, a reporter for the Khmer-language newspaper Rasmei Kampuchea Daily, was shot through his left foot and Phen Tharoth was shot through the thigh at the Shell station on Monivong Boulevard.

The two suspects arrested for the shooting were a security guard at the station and the son of the station's owner, said Khuon Sam Ol, district military police chief.

The suspects, whose names Khuon Sam Ol declined to reveal, had a K-59 handgun in their possession at the time of the arrest Saturday night. Three spent shell casings were recovered at the scene.

Pen Samithy, editor in chief of Rasmei Kampuchea, said that the trouble began when the 19-year-old son of another Rasmei Kampuchea reporter decided to urinate in the Shell station's flowerbed at around 11pm.

A guard at the gas station took exception to the flowerbed being urinated on and struck the young man above the eyebrow with a blunt object, inflicting a wound that required five stitches.

Sroy Nika and Phen Tharoth then accompanied the boy and his parents back to the station at around 11:30 pm to confront the guard, Pen Samithy said.

"When we got off the motorbike they shot at us," Sroy Nika claimed Monday from his hospital bed. "The gunmen shot at us three or four times," he said.

The owner of the Shell station could not be contacted, and station employees declined to comment on the incident

Phen Tharoth was seriously wounded, his brother Phen Theara said.

Municipal military police information bureau chief Pol Davy said that both parties are currently negotiating compensation.

If paid, the two alleged shooters would not face charges.

"This case is too much of a headache," Pol Davy said.

"After both sides finally agree, we will abide by their decision."
