SRP lawmaker Keo Remy has urged the UN in New York to support former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein's request for execution by firing squad, and for the world body to convince the Iraqi government to grant Hussein's last wish.
Hussein, deposed by a US-led invasion in 2003, was sentenced to death by hanging by an Iraqi tribunal Sunday for his role in executing of 148 Shiite Muslims in 1982.
Hussein, a Sunni Muslim, had requested that if he were sentenced to die, he would prefer to be shot.
Keo Remy said that his appeal to the UN, dated Tuesday, was based on the desire to quell violence in Iraq, and his Buddhist principles.
"By accepting Saddam's request," Keo Remy wrote, "I believe that the level of anger of his supporters who are creating turmoil, leading [to] the killings of innocent civilians and foreign forces operating in Iraq, will be lowered."
Keo Remy decried the cruelty of hanging in an interview Wednesday. "As a Buddhist, I don’t want to see such a cruel death penalty," he said. "Hanging could escalate violence.... [Hussein] should be granted his final wish."
The written appeal to the UN also cites the Convention on Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment adopted by the UN in 1984 as the basis under which the body should take action.
Information Minister and government spokesman Khieu Kanharith said that the government had no official position regarding the verdict, but that it was opposed to the death penalty in general.
Othsman Hassan, CPP Labor Ministry secretary of state and a prominent Cambodian Muslim, said he saw no difference between the two methods of execution.
"Neither is better than the other," he said. "You're dead in the end regardless."
