Phnom Penh - Three Malaysian men have been charged with drug trafficking after airport customs officials allegedly found 12.4 kilograms of crystal methamphetamines concealed in their luggage, an official said Friday. Senior customs official at Phnom Penh International Airport, Sok Yetha, said Ching Sie Luen, 29, Hii Lu Ung, 36 and Tie Sing Hui, 31, were arrested as they tried to board a flight to Kuala Lumpur Thursday after x-rays detected abnormalities in packages in their luggage labeled as tea.

"The search revealed eight packages of white powder split between the three men's baggage which was identified as methamphetamine," he said.

The haul is possibly the biggest of the drug ever nabbed at the airport, which has also foiled several attempts to smuggle massive amounts of heroin so far this year.

Cambodia has increasingly been identified as a source of the highly addictive and dangerous synthetic drug as neighbouring countries such as Thailand crack down.

If convicted the men face between 10 and 20 years in prison.
